Solo mission to the adorable town of Leiden.
For those who want to experience the Netherlands like a local I highly recommend you plan a day trip to the cozy little town of Leiden.
I had never heard of Leiden until I purchased a lens for my Canon A1 film camera. The train ride is about 35 minute departing from the Amsterdam Sloterdijk station. It's well worth the ticket!
After picking up my camera lens I decided to spend the day wandering around the cozy streets. I stumbled across the Hortus Botanicus, Leiden's Botanical Gardens, and spent a few hours virtually alone wandering amongst the expansive greenhouses and manicured gardens. The gardens were beautiful, a hidden gem of the town, and are attached to the University of Leiden.
After a while I grew hungry. If you do decide to pay a visit I highly recommend walking along Nieuwe Rijn and stopping at Roo's to try their carrot cake (it's absolutely to die for).
Basically spend the day wandering around the old part of town and you will have a grand time. There are so many places to stop and pop in for kick snacks or full meals.
Word of warning... when you are trying to get home ask a station staff if you are unsure of where to go. I got confused as to where my train to Amsterdam was. Don't do what I did and hop on the one you think is right... it might end with an extra hour to the trip due to all the backtracking and extra train jumping :)
